Breast augmentation adds volume to small breasts and shapes irregularly shaped breasts. This goal can be achieved in two ways; breast augmentation using fat or silicone prosthesis. At the point of how breast augmentation surgery is performed, the breast augmentation surgery to be performed is the surgery performed under general anaesthesia in the operating room. Under normal conditions, it can be performed within 1 to 1.5 hours. For people with low nipples, breast augmentation surgery can be performed alone or in combination with breast lift (mastopexy).
There are many reasons to have a breast augmentation operation. The fact that one breast is smaller than the other or both are small in general can cause self-confidence problems in women. If this situation causes discomfort to a person, it makes sense to consult a plastic surgeon for examination. Breast augmentation, also called breast augmentation surgery, can also be performed after breast cancer surgery. In order to have accurate information about what you will see after breast augmentation, you should communicate clearly with the surgeon and express your wishes clearly.
During breast augmentation surgery, silicone or saline implants with the body’s own fat tissue and stem cells can be preferred. In autologous surgery, fat is taken from the fat layers on both sides of the abdomen and placed appropriately in the breast tissue. In order for this adipose tissue to remain permanently in its new location, it must be supplied by blood vessels. In order to create new blood vessels, it must be transplanted together with stem cells. The implants may contain saline or silicone gel in silicone. After insertion, the saline implant is filled with sterile saline.
To place an implant in a breast in a breast augmentation operation, the surgeon can make a single incision. The area under the breast, armpit, around the nipple (around the areola) are the areas where incisions can be made. After the incision, the surgeon completely separates the breast tissue from the muscle and connective tissue of the breast. The surgeon places the implant in the pocket centred behind the nipple. Saline implants are placed into the pocket empty and then filled with sterile saline. Silicone implants are already pre-filled with silicone gel. After the implant placement is complete, the surgeon closes the incision with (self-made) sutures and binds it with a surgical adhesive. The choice of incision site is extremely important to minimise scarring.
Breast augmentation may cause pain and swelling. You can also see scratches at the end of this operation. Scars disappear over time. During recovery, you may need to wear a compression bandage or sports bra to further support your breast implants and maintain their position. Your surgeon will already recommend the products you need. Pain control is easily achieved with painkillers prescribed by your doctor. You should follow the surgeon’s instructions carefully to return to normal life. It is also important during the healing process that you do not do physically demanding work that mobilises your body. Never forget that your breasts are sensitive to physical contact and sudden movements during the recovery period. If your surgeon has opted for non-absorbable stitches or placed a drainage tube near your breast, he/she will make another appointment to remove them. A breast that is red or has a high temperature may indicate an infection caused by the surgery. In such cases, you should contact your surgeon as soon as possible. Similarly, problems such as shortness of breath or chest pain should be examined by a surgeon immediately.
Breast augmentation is suitable for adult women with healthy, realistic expectations who want to increase the size of their breasts. Anyone over 18 years of age can have this procedure, but ideal candidates are women aged 22 and over.
Breast augmentation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours. Implants are placed under the breast, under the breast tissue or under the chest muscles. The surgeon determines the incision site and implant placement method according to the patient’s anatomy and preference.
The healing period is usually between 1-2 weeks. There may be swelling, bruising and discomfort for the first few days. Patients can usually return to normal activities within a few days, but full recovery may take several weeks.
Breast implants are long-lasting, but they are not durable for life. Implants should usually be replaced after 10-15 years. In addition, factors such as ageing, weight changes and pregnancy can affect breast shape and size.
