LIPOLYSIS AND REGIONAL SLIMMING
Lipolysis is the process of breaking down and shrinking fat cells in the body. In aesthetic applications, this method, referred to as “medical lipolysis,” is a non-surgical body contouring procedure performed using injections or technological devices to reduce stubborn regional fat deposits that persist despite diet and exercise. The fat cells disrupted during the procedure are naturally eliminated from the body through metabolic pathways.
Who is it Suitable For (and Who Should Avoid It)?
Lipolysis is ideal for individuals who are at a normal general weight but have resistant fat pockets in specific areas (such as the abdomen, hips, love handles, or under the chin). However;
- It is not applied to pregnant or breastfeeding women,
- Individuals with liver or kidney disease,
- Those with active skin infections in the application area,
- Individuals with bleeding disorders.
- Note: For individuals with severe obesity, the priority should be overall weight loss; lipolysis is a body shaping method, not a weight-loss solution.
Non-Surgical Lipolysis Methods and Products Used
Two main methods are preferred for dissolving regional fat:
- Injection Lipolysis (Needle Lipolysis): Fat-dissolving substances are injected directly into the target area. The most commonly used ingredients in this method are preparations containing Deoxycholic acid, Phosphatidylcholine combinations, and mesotherapy mixtures enriched with vitamins and supportive nutrients.
- Device-Based Methods: These include technological applications that target fat cells, such as CoolSculpting (Cryolipolysis), Radiofrequency, Ultrasonic Lipolysis, and Laser Lipolysis.
Session Frequency, Duration, and Expected Results
Lipolysis treatments are generally planned for 2 to 6 sessions. Sessions are performed at intervals of 3–4 weeks, and each session lasts approximately 15–30 minutes. Visible, positive results usually begin to appear within a few weeks following the procedure.
Potential Side Effects
It is normal to experience some side effects after the application.
- Common Side Effects: Swelling, redness, bruising, and tenderness (these are typically temporary).
- Rare Side Effects: Hardness in the tissue (nodule formation), infection, asymmetry, and very rarely, nerve damage.
Post-Procedure Care and Recommendations
To enhance the success of the treatment and ensure a comfortable recovery process, the following guidelines should be followed:
- Drink plenty of water to support the elimination of disrupted fat cells from the body.
- Avoid intense exercise on the first day.
- Stay away from hot environments such as saunas, Turkish baths, and hot showers for a period of time.
- Avoid applying excessive pressure to the treated area, and use special massages or a medical corset if recommended by your doctor.
Longevity and the Importance of Dietary Support
The fat cells destroyed by lipolysis are permanently reduced. However, if the individual’s lifestyle does not change and significant weight gain occurs, the remaining fat cells in the region can expand, leading to re-fatting in that area.
Therefore, while medical lipolysis is effective on its own for small and localized fat deposits, it is not always sufficient by itself. To ensure permanent results, prevent the re-formation of fat, and support the metabolism, seeking guidance from a dietitian is highly recommended.
In Summary; Lipolysis is not a weight-loss method, but rather a body sculpting procedure specifically targeting small, resistant fat areas. The most successful and long-lasting results are always achieved when supported by a healthy diet plan and regular exercise.
