Epilation is the process of reducing unwanted hair from the root, either permanently or for the long term. Unlike “depilation” methods (such as shaving or depilatory creams) that only remove hair from the skin’s surface, the primary goal of epilation is to weaken or completely destroy the hair follicle. This process targetting the root ensures a long-term reduction in hair and is most commonly applied through laser hair removal today.

Epilation can be applied to all men and women experiencing unwanted hair problems. It is also an ideal solution for individuals with excessive hair growth due to hormonal or genetic reasons. For the application, the post-puberty period is generally expected, once hormone levels have stabilized.

Who should avoid it?

  • It is generally postponed for pregnant individuals until after childbirth.
  • It is not applied to areas with active skin infections, open wounds, or burns.
  • It is avoided for those with diseases that cause light sensitivity.
  • It is not suitable for individuals using specific medications that induce photosensitivity.

Hair Removal Methods and Device Technologies

Three main technologies and methods stand out in hair removal:

  • Laser Hair Removal: Uses light energy to directly target the hair follicle.
  • Electrolysis (Needle Epilation): A fine needle is inserted into each hair follicle individually to deliver an electrical current, destroying the root.
  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): Operates on a similar principle to lasers but utilizes a broader spectrum of light.

Types of Laser Devices Used

Different devices are preferred based on the individual’s skin type and hair structure:

Session intervals for laser hair removal vary by region. The ideal interval for the facial area is 4 to 6 weeks, while for the body area, it is 6 to 8 weeks. Typically, 6 to 8 sessions are required to achieve the desired result.

In electrolysis, session durations vary between 15 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the application area. This process, scheduled once a week or once every two weeks, can take months to complete depending on hair density.

Advantages and Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal

In addition to providing long-term hair reduction, laser hair removal is advantageous because it is fast, comfortable, and applicable to large areas. It also significantly reduces the formation of ingrown hairs.

Temporary redness and a mild burning sensation may occur after the application. Although rare, there are risks of burns, spotting (hyperpigmentation), and, in very rare cases, scarring. The effectiveness of lasers is quite low on very light-colored hair, such as white or blonde. Furthermore, it should absolutely never be applied over lesions suspected of melanoma.

Post-Treatment Care and Recommendations

For a successful and trouble-free process, the following rules should be observed after the treatment:

  • The skin must be well-protected from the sun, and a high-factor sunscreen (SPF) must be used.
  • Hot showers, saunas, and Turkish baths should be avoided for the first 24 hours following the application.
  • The treated area should not be irritated, and if crusting occurs, these crusts must absolutely not be picked off.
  • Hair appearing between sessions should be shaved instead of being waxed or plucked with tweezers.
  • Regular attendance at sessions is essential, and one should be patient, knowing that the hair will not disappear instantly.
